Advertising Content Guidelines

TownBrief reviews every ad before it goes live. These guidelines describe what we approve and what we don’t. Meeting them the first time gets your ad live faster — see our Advertising Terms for the review timeline and refund policy.

Not accepted

  • Illegal products or services under Massachusetts or federal law.
  • Adult content, or content otherwise inappropriate for a general local-news readership.
  • Hate speech, harassment, or content that discriminates against a protected class.
  • Deceptive or misleading claims, including unsubstantiated health or financial claims.
  • Malware, phishing, or any creative that redirects visitors somewhere other than the stated click-through URL.
  • Content that impersonates TownBrief, a town government, or any public official.
  • Auto-playing audio or video, or creative designed to mimic editorial content (native-ad style) without clear labeling.
  • Political campaign advertising. TownBrief maintains strict non-partisanship in its news product; campaign and ballot-question ads are not accepted on any surface.

Required

  • A working click-through URL that resolves to a real page (not a redirect chain).
  • Truthful, substantiated claims about your product, service, or organization.
  • Legible, non-distracting creative — no flashing/strobing effects.
  • Alt text describing the ad, for accessibility.

Image specs

Recommended dimensions by surface (creative is not auto-resized — submit at these sizes for best results):

  • Article In-Content: 728×90 or 1200×628, under 500KB.
  • Homepage Banner: 728×90, under 500KB.
  • Roundup Email: 600×150, under 200KB (email clients are less forgiving of large images).
  • Site-Wide Takeover: contact us — this surface uses custom header/footer treatments sized to each town’s theme.

Review & rejection

Reviews are typically completed within one business day (9:00 AM–5:00 PM ET, Monday–Friday). If your ad is rejected, you’ll receive the specific reason and can resubmit at no additional cost — your booked dates stay fixed. Purchases are non-refundable regardless of review outcome; see the Advertising Terms for details.
